这是“塞尔达传说”系列中唯一带有序号标志的作品，同时也是该系列中唯一的横向卷轴作品，算的是一部异类。故事发生在前作的一年后，林克为阻止魔王加农多罗夫的复活并拯救沉睡的塞尔达公主而再次踏上了冒险的旅程。

本作中引入了经验值概念，升级时可以自由增加攻击力、魔法和体力三项数值，不过比较奇怪的是如果GAME OVER或者存档中断后再继续，三项能力值就会自动降低到之前最低的那一项，这大大限制了玩家自由发挥的空间。游戏的流程以及迷宫设计水准依旧相当高，虽然纯横向平台式卷轴的进行方式令熟悉前作的玩家有些不习惯，但无论是销量还是口碑都完全达到了名作续集应有的风范：FAMICOM通信的评分是9分，游戏的销量是161万，全球累计438万。
